Andrew Fraser MP - Labor State Member for Mt Coot-tha

Meet Andrew Fraser

A hard-working, effective, accessible local Member

Andrew Fraser MP
At 33, Andrew Fraser is one of the youngest Members of the Queensland Parliament – and one of the youngest Ministers in the state’s history.

Andrew was first elected as the Labor MP for the state electorate of Mount Coot-tha on 7th February 2004.

After first serving as Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier and Treasurer, Andrew then served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier and Minister For Health.

Previously, he had served as a member of the Legal, Constitutional and Administrative Review Committee and on the panel of temporary chairs to deputise for the Speaker in the chamber. Within the government, Andrew has chaired the Environment Legislative Committee and served as member of this committee and the Education Legislative Committee, reflecting his twin policy passions. Andrew Chaired the Impact of Petrol Pricing Select Committee's Inquiry which reported to the Queensland Parliament in April 2006.

In the 2006 state election, he was re-elected and appointed to his first Ministry – Local Government, Planning and Sport – two days shy of his 30th birthday.

As Local Government Minister, Andrew undertook the most historic reform of Queensland councils in history.

In September 2007 when Anna Bligh assumed the Queensland Premiership – creating history as the state’s first female Premier – one of her first jobs in announcing her new Cabinet was to appoint Andrew Treasurer, the youngest person to hold the role since 1915.

Since he was first elected to represent Mt Coot-tha, Andrew has prided himself on working hard as an effective – and critically, accessible – local MP.

Fittingly, this young MP represents one of the youngest electorates in Queensland.

Andrew's experience and energy are poured into being an active, effective local MP for our suburbs. With experience in the state government and in Canberra, developing policy knowledge across a range of areas including education, housing, urban renewal, economics, government budgeting, public works, justice and crime prevention.

Raised and educated in Proserpine in the state’s north, Andrew won a scholarship and moved to Brisbane to attend Griffith University and, like many other students, later settled in the Paddington area.

While working part-time, he completed degrees in law and commerce, graduating with first-class honours and winning the University Medal.
